African Mahogany transpiration with Granier method and water table lysimeter AGRIAMBI
Sérvulo,Ana C. O.; Vellame,Lucas M.; Casaroli,Derblai; Alves Júnior,José; Souza,Pedro H. de.
ABSTRACT The thermal dissipation probe (Granier method) is useful in the water deficit monitoring and irrigation management of African Mahogany, but its model needs proper adjustment. This paper aimed to adjust and validate the Granier sap flux model to estimate African Mahogany transpiration, measure transpiration using lysimeter and relate it to atmospheric water demand. Weather conditions, transpiration and sap flux were monitored in three units of 2.5-year-old African Mahogany trees in constant water table lysimeter, in Goiânia, GO. Sapwood area (SA), leaf area (LA), transpiration measured by lysimeter (TLYS) and estimated by sap flux (TSF) were evaluated. The SA comprised 55.24% of the trunk’s transversal section. The LA varied from 11.95 to 10.66 m2....

Analysis of Hydraulic Conductance Components in Field Grown, Mature Sweet Cherry Trees Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Oyarzún,Ricardo; Stöckle,Claudio; Whiting,Matthew.
As a necessary step towards understanding soil water extraction and plant water relationships, the components of hydraulic conductance (K) of mature sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) trees were evaluated in situ based on a Ohm´s law analog method. In June 2004, K was determined for 10-yr-old ‘Bing’/‘Gisela® 5’ trees, from simultaneous measurements of whole canopy gas exchange and leaf (sunlit and shaded) and stem water potentials (Ψ). Leaf water potential of sunlit leaves was lower than shaded leaves, reaching minimum values of ca. -2.3 MPa around 14:00 h (solar time). Average total hydraulic conductance was 60 ± 6 mmol s-1 MPa-1, presenting a slight decreasing trend as the season progressed. The analysis of tree K components showed that it was...

Filgueira,Raúl Roberto; Golik,Inés Silvina; Sarli,Oliverio Guillermo; Jatimliansky,Raúl Jaime.
Two Argentine field grown wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.), Buck Cencerro (BC) with traditional germoplasm, and Buck Pucará (BP) with Mexican germoplasm, have been investigated in order to compare anatomical and physiological characteristics of the flag leaf measured in heading (stage E59), anthesis (stage E69) and kernel water ripe (stage 71). In both cultivars, photosynthetic rate was not different for the same phenological stage, except for E71. Averages in stage E59 were higher than stages E69 and E71 for both cultivars (22.70, 18.40 and 10.40 µmol m-2 s-1 for BP and 23.82, 18.41 and 8.28 µmol m-2 s-1 for BC, respectively). Transpiration rates were higher in BP (5.0, 5.6 and 4.89 mmol m-2 s-1) than BC (3.3, 4.4 and 2.57 mmol m-2 s-1) for stages...

ASSESSMENT OF CORN WATER UPTAKE BASED ON SAP HEAT TRACING UNDER WATER-STRESSED CONDITIONS AGRIAMBI
Santos,Antonio Odair; Bergamaschi,Homero; Rosa,Luís M. G.; Bergonci,João I.; Radin,Bernadete.
ABSTRACT Crop water monitoring is an important aspect for precise control of irrigation. A reliable and movable technique is needed to properly assess water uptake of crops in the field. Water uptake by field grown maize ( Zea mays L.), in water-limited conditions was verified with the heat pulse system. The temperature difference between two radially inserted thermocouples, one 9 mm above and the other 4 mm below a heater piercing the maize stem, was measured every 0.3 sec following emission of a heat pulse in conditions of varied atmospheric demand. Comparisons of heat pulse system outputs and a high precision transpiration model estimates were done on hourly and daily basis, when low sap velocities were expected to occur. Hourly and daily basis of the...

Carbohydrate production and transport in cotton cultivars grown under boron deficiency Scientia Agricola
Bogiani,Julio Cesar; Amaro,Amanda Cristina Esteves; Rosolem,Ciro Antonio.
An adequate supply of boron (B) is required for the optimal growth and development of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants, but the low phloem mobility of B limits the possibilities of correcting B deficiency. There are indications that different cotton cultivars could have different responses to B deficiency. The differences in responses of cotton cultivars to B regarding photoassimilate production and transport were studied in a greenhouse experiment with nutrient solution. Treatments consisted of three cotton cultivars (FMT 701, DP 604BG and FMX 993) and five concentrations of B (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 20.0 µmol L−1). Sampling began at the phenological stage B1 (first square) and continued for four weeks. The leaf area and the number of reproductive...

Gas exchange alteration caused by water deficit during the bean reproductive stage AGRIAMBI
Endres,Lauricio; Souza,José L. de; Teodoro,Iedo; Marroquim,Paula M. G.; Santos,Claudiana M. dos; Brito,José E. D. de.
The purpose of the present study was to analyze gas exchanges in leaves and the parameters of productivity of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris, L.) submitted to two water deficiency periods during which three water regimes were employed: W1 (1,0 ETo during the entire plant cycle); W2 (1,0 ETo up to the flowering period and irrigation interruption from the 37 to the 51st day following sowing, and W3 (in addition to the reproductive phase, water deficit was also applied during the vegetative stage). Photosynthesis was one of the main physiological factors affected by water deficit. This was not only caused by the stomata closure, but also by carboxilation reduction due to metabolic damage. This effect was, however, offset 24 h after rehydration. During flowering,...

Gas exchange of the umbu tree under semi-arid conditions Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Lima Filho,José Moacir Pinheiro.
A study was carried out at Embrapa Semi-Árido, Petrolina-PE, Brazil, aiming to understand the gas exchange process of the umbu tree (Spondias tuberosa Arr. Cam.) in the dry and rainy seasons. Stomatal conductance, transpiration, photosynthesis and internal CO2 concentration were obtained with a portable infrared gas analyzer (IRGA). During the dry season the umbu tree showed a much lower stomatal conductance early in the morning, as soon as the vapor pressure deficit increased, apparently affecting CO2 assimilation more than transpiration. The highest values were detected around 6:00 am but decreased to the lowest points between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. During the rainy season, however, stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis were significantly...

Gold phytoextraction and mining-degraded soil reclamation Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Ramírez Pisco,Ramiro; Gómez Yarce,Juan Pablo; Guáqueta Restrepo,Juan José; Gaviria Palacio,Daniel.
Abstract Gold phytoextraction is a technology used to obtain this metal (Au) throughout plants. Some of the benefits of this technology are the mitigation of the environmental impact, the fact that it does not imply the constant use of pollutants, and has the ability to promote soil reclamation. The aim of this research was to determine if Brachiaria decumbens has the potential to improve soil physical properties while had achieved a gold extraction. For this purpose, Helianthus annuus and Brachiaria decumbens, were used in a completely randomized design with four replicates. To induce gold uptake, ammonium thiocyanate was applied to plants. The statistical analysis was performed using the R-Studio software. Finally, it became evident that B. decumbens is...

Intensity of bitterness of processed yerba mate leaves originated in two contrasted light environments BABT
Rakocevic,Miroslava; Medrado,Moacir José Sales; Lucambio,Fernando; Valduga,Alice Teresa.
The bitterness intensity of beverage prepared from the leaves produced on the males and females of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), grown in the forest understory and monoculture, was evaluated. The leaves were grouped by their position (in the crown and on the branch tips) and by the leaf age. The leaf gas exchange, leaf temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density were observed. Inter and intra-specific competition for light and self-shading showed the same effect on yerba mate beverage taste. All the shading types resulted in bitterer taste of the processed yerba mate leaves compared to the leaves originated under the direct sun exposure. The leaves from the plants grown in the monoculture showed less bitterness than those grown in the forest...

Leaf micronutrient concentrations and potential photosynthesis in Ochroma pyramidale established in a degraded land Acta Amazonica
MARENCO,Ricardo A.; VIEIRA,Gil; GONÇALVES,José F. de C..
In the Brazilian Amazon, large areas of abandoned lands may revert to secondary forest. In the process, pioneer tree species have an important role to restore productivity in old fields and improve environmental conditions. To determine potential photosynthesis (Apot), stomatal conductance (g), transpiration (E), and leaf micronutrient concentrations in Ochroma pyramidale (Cav. ex Lam.) Urban a study was carried out in the Brazilian Amazon (01o 51' S; 60o 04' W). Photosynthetic parameters were measured at increasing [CO2], saturating light intensity (1 mmol (photons) m-2 s-1), and ambient temperature. The rate of electron-transport (J), Apot, and water-use efficiency (WUE) increased consistently at increasing internal CO2 concentration (Ci). Conversely,...
